Singer Building, NYC c. 1900

In the early 1900s Singer Building in New York we see architects still clinging the ornamentation of the past, and tentatively searching for the best means to approach the new “tall buildings, ” whose philosophy, function, and outlook had already clearly broken with the past. (Notice the late 1800s Second Empire French Mansard roof style crowning the building's main structure.)
