Seagram Building, NYC - Mies van der Rohe &
Philip Johnson 1958

By the 1930s the "International Style" as identified by Philip Johnson and Henry-Russell Hitchcock had emerged as the new expression of the “tall building” or skyscraper. Clean, sparse, and devoid of ornament, the forms of the new materials and their structural frames become the aesthetic for the middle years of the twentieth century. It reaches its apotheosis in Mies van der Rohe’s and Philip Johnson’s Seagrams Building in New York in 1958, considered the crown jewel of the International Style.
